Station/Boat Location~
District 17 Juneau

Date there~
July 2004

Weather~
It rains all the time and I mean all the time. The winters are unbelievably depressing. I have never had a problem with depression before moving to Juneau, but the winters here are dark, with only 4 hours of dusk like daylight.!

Military facilities~
None

Medical~
There are medical and dental facilities at the district office.

Housing~
Housing is on the economy. Be very careful of the mold factor. Most houses here have severe mold problems. Long time Juneauites are very aware of the rotation season and are more than willing to sell a Coastie a mold filled home. GET AN INSPECTION.

Shopping~
Extremely limited. There are three or four grocery stores and two places the locals refer to as malls. I would not be that generous. Most shop online and by catalog. Be aware that most retailers chap additional fees for shipping to Alaska, if they ship there at all.

Adult Schools~
The University of Alaska Juneau - limited curriculum.

Fun Activities~
If you like being rained on while outdoors (all the time), like fishing and hunting this is the place for you. If not, you will probably not like Juneau. There is not much else to do.

Additional Comments~
My husband has been with the CG for more than 20 years; over the last 12 years we have moved 8 times. This is the first location that we have not enjoyed. I had heard before we arrived that people either love it or hate it and I would have to agree. It is very expensive to travel from Juneau as you can only leave by plane or ferry. The local culture is very unique and not always pleasant. Drinking and drunk driving is a major problem in Juneau.
