Weather~
Fairly mild because Kodiak sits on the gulf and gets the warm air currents from Japan. Temps in the winter avg from the mid teens to low 40's. Summer time avg is high 40's to upper 60's. Like most places in Alaska, Kodiak, gets lots of rain and gray days, with occasional breaks of sunshine. Not a lot of snow in the winter, what we do get doesn't usually stick around long. We do get very high winds and lots of ice.

Military facilities~
Kodiak is home to the World's Largest Coast Guard Base. On base you will find a decent size commissary, exchange, convenience store, gas station, movie theater, bowling alley, pizza parlor, galley, all hands club, hair salon/barber shop, day care center, guest housing and medical clinic.

Medical~
Rockmore King Clinic will see dependents and we have always received excellent care there. Kodiak, now has Tri-Care Prime remote and there are two medical clinics in town that you can utilize. There is a decent hospital, that can handle most things. Some specialty type things are sent to Anchorage or we do get visiting specialty clinics as well.

Housing~
Lots of CG owned that runs the gamut from very old to brand new. Many different styles, town house, duplexs, four plexes and single family. Most have fenced yards. Some have garages. Lots of playgrounds for the kids. All units come with washers and dryers. You can also utilize your BHA and rent or buy on your own.

Shopping~
We have a small Wal-Mart and the largest Safeway in the Pacific Northwest. Most of the typical fast food (except Taco Bell) and of course lots of locally owned businesses. We also do a lot of mail order and internet shopping as well as power shopping trips to Anchorage.

Child Care/Schools~
There are 4 elementary schools. Peterson is the one that most children on the base attend. One Jr High and one Sr high.. kids from the base are bused into town. There are also a couple of private/religious schools. There is the day care center on base. One day care center in town and lots of private in home day care.

Adult Schools~
There is a branch of the University of Alaska.

Fun Activities~
Lots of outdoor things.. hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, beach combing, tide pooling. Wild life galore.. Brown Bear, Sitka Black Tail Deer, Seals, Whales, Otters, Foxes, Eagles etc.. There is Crab Fest in May, the State Fair in September, the Parade of Lights in December, Fireworks on the 4th of July. Bingo at the Golden Anchor.

Additional Info~
Kodiak is called the Emerald Island and lives up to that name.. it is so lush and green here. When the sun is shining this place just glistens. Kodiak has a lot to offer as long as you go out and do and experience. Take in all that it does have to offer and do not focus on what it doesn't and your tour here will be enjoyable!
