:: Kodiak, AK - Jruss
Station/Boat Location~
North Pacific Regional Fisheries Training Center

Date there~
2013-2016

Weather~
Winter months are dark, foggy, windy and rainy. Less snow than you’d expect from Alaska. Summer months are beautiful, often sunny 60s-70s, light until midnight.

Military facilities~
Small CG exchange, small commissary, bowling, restaurant/bar, gym with pool and indoor sports.

Medical~
Clinic on base but most spouses use off-base medical. There is one hospital on island and two medical offices to choose from. I recommend Dr Walters for PCP. Little specialty care on island, you will fly to Anchorage for specialty care. I recommend Dr. Spivey for dental, for both adults and children.

Housing~
There are quite a few different housing layouts on base. We lived in a small 3br one story duplex in desperate need of updates, but with a decent fenced yard ;)

Shopping~
Walmart, Safeway and small local shops. That’s it. Invest in amazon prime.

Child Care/Schools~
CDC has a year long wait list. Once you’re in, it’s an amazing facility with caring providers.

Adult Schools~
I finished my MSW degree online in Kodiak from University of New England. Kodiak College offers classes and degrees locally.

Fun Activities~
Fishing, hiking, berry picking, bear watching, anything outdoors!

Additional Comments~
I have a love hate relationship with Kodiak. The dark months are difficult; dark, rainy, cold, boring. There wasn’t a lot to do with little kids (my boys were under 4 this tour) when the weather was bad (and the weather is often not ideal). I stayed busy with my internships and schoolwork. The summer months are so beautiful; I always said I would stay in Kodiak forever if it was a Kodiak summer year round ;) Everyone comes out of the woodwork on sunny days because they’re so rare, and everyone is in a good mood. The people of kodiak are kind and the culture is fascinating. It’s a great opportunity to get a taste of Alaska.
