:: Mobile, AL - Mellyberm
Station/Boat Location~
ATC Mobile

Date there~
12/2004 - 12/2009

Weather~
Nice weather year around. Gets suffocatingly hot in the summer months, and humid most of the year minus winter. Does get quite freezing cold in the winter(30s-40s are common) Hurricane season between June and December

Military facilities~
ATC Mobile has a nice gym, great pool that is open in the summer

Medical~
On base medical/dental is for AD only

Housing~
No housing in Mobile. Many Coasties live in Copeland Island off Grand Bay Wilmer, affectionately known as "Coastie Island". Preferred living area is West Mobile. Coasties always seem to be renting out their own houses in Mobile and if you are looking to rent, ask on CC. You are likely to get a few replies.

Shopping~
Lots of shopping in and around Mobile. Malls, Sam's Club, plenty of Walmarts, Target, just anything and everything. Also a lot of great shopping across the bay on the Eastern Shore(Daphne, Spanish Fort)

Child Care/Schools~
Tons of Mom's Day Out programs, preschools, and lots of selection. There are private schools, many supported by a home church, and the public schools are nice depending on the area. The top schools I could recommend would be (public) Hutchens Elementary, Collier Elementary, and (private) Knollwood Christian or Faith Academy(which is also located just across the street from the Exchange, down the street from ATC)

Adult Schools~
University of South Alabama, University of Mobile

Fun Activities~
beach is about 30-40 minutes away, lots of warm weather activities, The Exploreum science center www.exploreum.com , Mardi Gras, The Battleship Alabama, lots of festive occasions year around full of flair such as St. Patty's Day downtown, BayFest in October, and more

Additional Info~
We loved living in Mobile. I am a warm weather person so I didn't mind the heat. I loved that you could go to the pool in the summer, soak up the sun and just chill. We also visited Pensacola(1-1/2 hrs)and what they had to offer, as well as New Orleans(2 hrs). Montgomery is about 3 hours away and rich in Civil Rights history. While you are there, seek out an alligator farm and go on a swam air boat ride. There is much to be discovered in Mobile, AL
