Station/Boat Location~
Concord, CA

Date there~
2004

Weather~
Hot summers 90's plus, but we have air conditioning, cool falls, winters mild with daytime temps in the 50-60's, dips down to freezing at night occasionally. Avg rainfall about 12 inches and most of that is in the winter.

Military facilities~
TRAVIS AFB is about 30-45 minutes away with a huge commissary, exchange and hospital. Alameda (CG Island) is about 20-30 minutes away.

Medical~
If you put in zip code 94519 (Concord) you will find hundreds of doctors locally that accept PRIME. Or you can choose to use the facilities at TRAVIS

Housing~
Coast Guard Housing in Concord consists of apartments or duplexes. The duplexes are about 1,000 sq ft for a 3 bedroom. They have a nice carport with storage shed, and an additional storage shed in the backyard. I haven't been inside of the apartments but they look newer from the outside and have a garage. Both have A/C, dishwashers, garbage disposal etc. Both are carpeted as well. The yards for the duplexes are a very nice size. There are plenty of shade trees in housing and its one of the first things I noticed. If you want to look up BAH for the area, the zip for CG Island, Alameda is 94501.

Shopping~
Woah, there isn't a store that I can think of that isn't within a few miles of here!! Downtown Walnut Creek, which is 3 to 4 miles away has an awesome shopping area. Grocery stores are Safeway, Albertson's, Costco, Sam's Club and my favorite Trader Joe's. Nearby is Target, Kmart and Walmart. Ikea is about 30 minutes away in Emeryville. The commisary is 30-45 minutes at TRAVIS AFB. Restaurants are plentiful here too, within minutes away, The Olde Spaghetti Factory, Claim Jumper, Elephant Bar, Denny's, Outback, Chevy's, and a Krispy Kreme to just name a few.

Child Care/Schools~
Don't know about childcare, but the school district is Mt. Diablo Unified, the elementary school is Holbrook, the middle school is Glenbrook, the high school is Mt Diablo High. The elementary school is close enough for children to walk although they do have to cross a street or two. The website http://www.mdusd.k12.ca.us/ will give you test scores and more school info. There is also a great homeschooling group that meets at various parks throughout the area weekly.

Adult Schools~
Diablo Valley College, Cal State University-Contra Costa Campus and Heald College are just a few off the top of my head.

Fun Activities~
Waterworld USA is in Concord, Pixieland Park is just outside housing and is a cute amusement park with kiddie rides and a train, San Francisco is just under an away, Monterey is about 2 hours away, and of course Napa Valley too. Several movie theaters, bowling alleys and of course parks are all over Concord.

Additional Info~
We're just on the outskirts of the city, close enough to be in town with minutes, but we get gorgeous scenery and wildlife. From my living room window, I've seen hawks, eagles, gophers, squirrels, coyote, cows and geese. The hills and mountains come to life in the winter with the rains and turn green, and turn brown in the summer. Housing is quiet with little traffic. The kids can bike in the streets and play on the numerous playgrounds and basketball courts throughout. There is mass transit BART (Bay Area Rail Transit) that you can use to get to CG Island if you don't wish to drive to work. The stop is about 1/2 mile or so from housing and the CG bus will pick you in downtown Alameda and drive you to your stop on the island. The CG issues BART tickets monthly for those wishing to use them. It takes DH a little longer to get to work this way, but it saves on gas and he gets to read on the train.
