Station/Boat Location~
Station Destin
Fort Walton Beach, FL is the main city in the area. Destin is about 20 minutes East. Shalimar, Mary Esther and Niceville are the surrounding towns. Pensacola is about 45 minutes West and Panama City is about 45? minutes East.
Date there~
1994-1998
Weather~
Hot! Winter can get cold, but doesn't stay that way for long.
Military facilities~
Eglin AFB is located in Shalimar, FL and Hurlburt is in Mary Esther, FL. They both have a very nice commissary and exchanges.
Medical~
Eglin AFB is the bigger of the two bases. The hospital is there while there is a clinic on Hurlburt.
Housing~
During the time we lived there, they had government lease. They don't have that anymore and I believe everyone is housed at Eglin. I don't know much about that, but it doesn't look like bad housing. Rentals would not be hard to find, Destin being the more expensive of the cities.
Shopping~
Shopping isn't bad. There is Santa Rosa Mall and there are the normal Targets and Walmarts. Sand Destin has a fabulous outlet center, one of the biggest ones I've seen!
Fun Activities~
The beach is fabulous. The NCO/Officers beach club is across from the station, a real nice place to park and there are showers available.
Big Kahunas is a water park in Destin. I can't think of much right now, hopefully I'll add more later.
Billy Bowlegs Festival is in June.....that's a lot of fun!
Great golf courses on base and off.
Hunting on the reservations.
Closed now...You must eat at the Coach n Four restaurant in FWB, anyone will be able to give you directions. They have the best steaks and fried seafood all under one roof. Loud, but great family restaurant.
Child Care/Schools~
There are schools on base, but I don't have any info on them.
Adult Schools~
There is Northwest Florida State College.
Additional Info~
Eglin Federal Credit Union is the main bank for the military.
The NorthWest Florida Daily News is the newspaper for the area.
It's a nice place to be.
