:: Fort Pierce, FL - Maddys Mom
Station/Boat Location~
Fort Pierce - USCGC BLUEFIN (87')

Date there~
2002-2004 Present

Weather~
Hot

Military facilities~
Patrick Air force base to the North

Medical~
Tricare Prime Very limited options on Doctors. Peds have a larger choice.

Housing~
On the Economy We live in Port St. Lucie,(3br rental- about 825 a month) We almost bought our first home here, decent homes for reasonable prices. Some families live in Vero Beach- I've heard positive things about the area. I was told to avoid Fort Pierce itself prior to coming here, but have found some nice area's- you just have to be careful.

Shopping~
Vero Beach has a nice mall, and outlets to the North. Jensen Beach has a decent mall and lots of strip malls to the South. Plenty of Grocery stores!

Child Care/Schools~
Decent child care- although I chose to remain home this tour, but we did check into some day care's in PSL and found several we liked. Schools are on a "Choice" system- I am not thrilled with the system, but we are fortunate to live in the right "ZONE", and had decent choices. You want to Check out your ZONE before finding where you want to live. PSL has better choices than Fort Pierce for sure! Vero has their own schools system and I have heard positive things about it, but I don't live there so can't share that info.

Fun Activities~
The beach. PSL is a great community- lots of family activities planned. Many sports offered through the Parks& Recreation. The Mets stadium is here.

Additional Info~
I was clueless coming into this move and what I heard was not real positive ...but I love it! IT is HOT during the summer months, and perfect in the winter(NO SNOW!). I would return if given the opportunity. We were attached to the Bluefin, and duty was reasonable and underway time is about 10-12 days out of the month (not bad at all!).
