beautiful during winter 60s - 70s low humidity. hot and humid during summer 80s - 90s with 90 percent humidity.
Military facilities~
navy commissary and exchange both very small. MWR, bowling ally, gym, child care facilities, beaches, and lodges all Navy. pool with water slides also.
Medical~
small naval medical center and off base drs, key west has a small hospital but i wouldn't recommend it.
Housing~
All naval housing some have been redone because of the last hurricane but most are 1950s inside, (avacado green bathrooms and blue bathrooms) duplexes and condo style, ok on space not much storage, some on the water. all of the housing is navy and not well maintained, its like pulling teeth to get repairs done. you can live off of the base but housing is expensive and crowded together.
Shopping~
limited!!! Kmart and the smallest sears on the planet o and home depo.. duval st has coach, express, bath and body works, and some other boutiques but they are all more expensive than anywhere else it is in the tourist area. the closest normal store is florida city 3 hours away. expect to pay more for everything even in kmart and sears.
Child Care/Schools~
rundown but great school on base.. i am not sure about off base.
Fun Activities~
limited again. for kids not much. the base has lots of parks for the kids and the pool with some waterslides. for adults the ITT had discounted tickets for snorkeling trips, day cruises to the dry tortugas and numerous other things. Baihi Honda state park is 40 min north and has some great beaches and hiking trails.
Additional Info~
This is a great coast guard place but the housing is run by the navy and isn't up to standards. It is a great place for singles and married couples without kids.. The cost of living is high and it has limited budgeted things to do. If you come here expect to evacuate a couple times a year for hurricanes up to orlando (6 hours). you will be reimbursed. and enjoy the beautiful 3 hour drive from miami, it is long but absolutely gorgious.
