Hot in the summer with a brief rain/thunder shower nearly everyday. In the winter it can get a little cold in January/February.
Military facilities~
MacDill Air Force Base is in Tampa, just over the Gandy Bridge. It has a commissary and exchange as well as medical facilities. A new rule was passed in 2009 and those living within certain zip codes must use MacDill for medical. The Coast Guard base downtown also offers a small commissary, mainly with liquor and a few other items.
Medical~
I got to use my own doctor for the first few years here and then in 2009 I was required to go to MacDill because I lived in a certain zip code. MacDill built a brand new medical building in Sept. 2009 and I was very pleased with the service and care I received there. For ob/gyn recommendations, many use Bayview Ob/Gyn on Central Avenue in St. Petersburg. They deliver at Bayfront Medical Center which opened a new Baby Place in January 2010.
Housing~
Most people live on the economy, but it is possible to get housing at MacDill. There are some very nice apartments within 15 minutes of the downtown base. Rents range from $800-1000 for a 2 bedroom apartment in a nice community which is about $1000 under BAH.
Shopping~
Every store you could ask for or want is either in St. Petersburg or Tampa! There are Outlets 45 minutes south in Ellenton, FL as well as one hour east in Orlando, Fl. The International Mall in Tampa offers more high-class stores such as Coach while the Countryside Mall in Clearwater offers indoor ice skating!
Adult Schools~
St. Petersburg College offers very affordable tuition and a variety of degrees. They offer 2 year and 4 year degrees and have campuses throughout Pinellas County. The teachers are wonderful and the classes were taught by local area officials which allowed great networking. Also close-by are USF, Eckerd College and Stetson (law school).
Fun Activities~
St. Petersburg has so much to offer! Just a few of our favorite activities include: Busch Gardens, Adventure Island, Lowry Park Zoo, Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando, Sarasota Jungle Gardens, Florida Aquarium, Wagon Wheel Flea Market, jet skiing/parasailing at John's Pass, Saturday Morning Market, First Friday in downtown St. Petersburg and many festivals!
