:: Honolulu, HI - sea siren
Station/Boat Location~
USCGC JARVIS(378')

Date there~
2003-2005

Weather~
Perfect. High 70's to mid 80's for the most, there is a rainy season in the fall/early winter but there are still plenty of great beach days even then. There are often tradewinds blowing, which cut any heat down and humidity is fairly low. You won't find better weather anywhere on the planet.

Military facilities~
Lots.
CG housing is at Red Hill and the adjacent AMR. These are gated and guarded "bases" that have only housing, convenience stores, gas stations, pool, gym, chapel, parks and playgrounds.
The CG base is downtown on Sand Island, there is a small exchange and gym there.
Closer to the CG housing would be Pearl Harbor (with the biggest NEX in the country) Naval base and Hickam AFB (with a nice commissary and BX area)
Also on Oahu are Schofield army barracks, Wheeler army base, Air Sta Barbers Pt, Marine Base Kaneohe, and some smaller installations.

Medical~
Tricare. Most residents of Red Hill opt for Tripler Army Medical Center, which is about 3 miles from housing or Pearl Harbor Makalapa clinic, which is about 5 miles away.

Housing~
Red Hill is the main housing area, some families are now being outsourced to various army locations including AMR.

Shopping~
Tons of shopping all over the island. There are 2 Walmarts, at least 1 K mart, and several really huge indoor/outdoor shopping malls.
Downtown Waikiki has a lot of neat specialty shops. The NEX mall at Pearl Harbor is HUGE and has everything. One other great shopping place is the swap meet- the aloha stadium parking lot turns into a swap meet every weekend and Wednesday.

Adult Schools~
University Of Hawaii has a main campus downtown as well as various satellite "jr" locations. Also, there is Hawaii Pacific University, and a branch of Brigham Young University on the windward side.

Fun Activities~
The beaches! These are the most beautiful beaches in the world. Take advantage of them! A big perk is the all military recreation base- Bellows Air Force Station with the islands most beautiful beach.
Also check out the Hale Koa in Waikiki, even if you don't stay overnight you can dine and play there on the beach and in the pool. Some other fun activities are Hawaiian Waters park, Sealife Park, and the many hiking trails around the island.

Additional Info~
If you have a chance to try Oahu, take it!
