:: Maui, HI - SA
Station/Boat Location~
Station Maui

Date there~
08/04 - Present

Weather~
Awesome!!! Temperatures range from 75-85 degrees every day. Light tropical showers every once and a while. The only downfall is that we don't see any seasons except for summer, but really it's not that bad.

Military facilities~
None, but if you fly over to Oahu (25 min flight) there are many, try the Navy exchange.

Medical~
Tricare Prime Remote. We have one main hospital, Maui Memorial Hospital that is good but not great. The doctors here are underpaid and have a lot of patients. Be patient and talk to the doctors that do accept Tricare. It is hard to find a OB/GYN that accepts Tricare so ask around.

Housing~
There is CG housing but if it is being used than you will live on the economy. Rent is kind of high, but you can find many houses and condo's for rent that are 1200-2200 dollars. Most rentals will include everything except electricity. The electricity bills here are high so don't be suprised. My husband and I pay at least 180 dollars a month because the a/c is running a lot. The station is in Maalaea, so you might want to live in Kihei. Kihei is sunny and has nice calm beaches. I would refrain from living in Kahului or Wailuku because it is really local and ghetto. The COLA here is great as well as the BAH so I'm sure you can find a great place to live. The Maui News has a lot of references for places to live, start there.

Shopping~
The shopping here is terrible. There is one mall with one Macy's and a Sears. Unfortunately I have to shop online for a lot of things and the shipping to Hawaii is horrendous. If you can fly over to Oahu, they have a great mall called the Ala Moana, it has everything. Food shopping is usually done at Safeway, Foodland or Star Market. Prices for food is a little higher so don't be alarmed. I would recomend signing up for a Safeway Card, which gives you discounts on certain products.

Child Care/Schools~
Child care is expensive ranging from 500 dollars to 1200 dollars for infants to preschool. There is a program called PATCH, they can refer you to child care providers, but please be aware, my sister had a terrible ccp that was not licensed and she found bruises on her baby. Talk to the ccp and ask for their training and credentials and license info. The schools are not good. Unfortunately there is discrimination against mainland USA kids, they get bullied. There are private schools but they are expensive (Montosori, St. Anthony and a couple more..) I actually know a lot of people that prefer to home school their kids.

Adult Schools~
Maui Community College and Satellite classes to U of Hawaii on Oahu.

Fun Activities~
Beaches are awesome. What can I say it's Maui. There are tons of outdoor activities and hiking. If I go on there will be a page of goodies. I will tell you a couple. Seven sacred pools in Hana, Big Beach in Makens (crystal blue water, but big waves). Hiking in Iao Vally. Watching the surf at Ho'okipa. There are also a lot of great restaurants and tons of art studios. If you like good sushi try Sansei, you won't be disappointed (thurs, fri, sat 1/2 off sushi after 10pm). Mulligans in Wailea is a fun Irish pub that has a great show on Sunday's. Always try to watch the sunset, it takes my breath away every time.

Additional Info~
Maui is a beautiful place to live. I loved the time that I have spent here, there are many things to see and do, but pace yourself and wait till family comes to visit to do the tourist activities, because you will end up doing them again when they come, and family loves to visit. Remember that you live on an island and you may get island fever, but just fly to another island and enjoy. Tourist are here constantly, so pay attention when your driving, because their not, they like to look at the water while driving. We only have 2 lane highways, so be patient and relax your in Maui.
