:: Louisville, KY - mkfm
Station/Boat Location~
MSO Louisville

Date there~
August 2000 - August 2003

Weather~
hot summers, somewhat mild winters (the most snow we had was 6 inches)

Military facilities~
Fort Knox is about an hour away.

Medical~
Fort Knox is about an hour away. Some people really enjoyed the facilities there. I found them to be out dated and very rude and non compassionate care. It is ok if you don't mind that you never see an actual doctor. We went to civilian doctors in Louisville. The hospitals are world known from the heart and hand transplants. University Hospital, Norton Hospitals, Jewish Hospital, some other smaller ones
PCM- Dr. Gary Davis
PEDS - Louisville Pediatric Specialists (AWESOME)
OB/GYN- University OBGYN Specialists (Dr. Eddlestone, Dr Gall -- great!!)

Housing~
On the economy. No govt leases. Stay on the East End of town or Oldham County. Some people lived on the IN side, in Jeffersonville. That is nice too. Housing can be a bit ridiculous in places. You just have to hunt. We rented b/c to buy was a bit silly!

Shopping~
LOVE IT! There are some nice malls. Mall St. Matthews, Oxmoor Center are my two favorites. There are some really neat specialty stores in Louisville. By Bee Pottery, Glassworks!!!

Child Care/Schools~
Jefferson County schools leave A LOT to be desired - book shortage! Need I say more? There are a lot of private schools to chose from, but you will pay! Oldham County schools are really good!

Adult Schools~
University of Louisville, Spalding University, Bellarmine University, Jefferson County Community College, Kentucky Weslyan University

Fun Activities~
THUNDER, DERBY, Zoo, Science Center, Waterfront Park, 1600 Jefferson County Parks, Kentucky Kingdom

Additional Info~
We really enjoyed our time there. My kids weren't in school so we didn't have that obstacle. Beautiful hills, esp in the fall! It is a really great place. Dh was home, basically, every night. The people there are very friendly. I was sad to go!
