:: Grand Isle, LA - Daisy615
Station/Boat Location~
Station Grand Isle and USCGC STURGEON(87')

Date there~
November 2002 - May 2005

Weather~
Summers are very warm and humid, temperatures are typically in the mid-high 90s. Winters are pretty mild with temps in the 40s-60s and WINDY!

Military facilities~
Closest military base is a navy base in New Orleans with an exchange and commissary

Medical~
We are on Tricare Prime Remote here. There are no PCMs. Just call Tricare to get a referral for a doctor.

Housing~
There is limited government housing - first come, first served basis. There are 2, 3 & 4 bedrooms available. Otherwise there is very LIMITED housing on the economy. Some families even choose to live in Houma, LA which is 2 hrs from the station.

Shopping~
There is one grocery store on the island, Sureway. The prices are a bit high there. Most people drive 45 mins. to 1 hr. to Galliano to go to the Super Walmart. In Houma, which is 2 hours away, there is a mall, Lowe's, Old Navy, Michaels, Target, etc. along with some restaurants (Chili's, Applebees, Olive Garden and fast food places).

Child Care/Schools~
Grand Isle High School which is K-12 is the only school on the island. Childcare is pretty limited also.

Adult Schools~
None. Some spouses have taken courses online due to the lack or colleges in the area unless you want to drive 2 hrs to New Orleans.

Fun Activities~
The Spouses' Club here puts together events for the families. There are also several fishing rodeos (aka tournaments) which is the BIG draw to the island in the summer time.
