Station/Boat Location~
USCGC MACKINAW (290')

Date there~
September 2002- present (Jan 2006)

Weather~
Winter:Snowy, Windy, Cold. You are right by the lake so you get a lot of the wind. The snow is very moist, again due to the lake. Cheboygan is also one of the lucky people to be in the snow belt. Which means a lot of snow!!!!!!! So be prepared!!
Summer:Very warm and cold. The first year I was here, it was sooooo hot! The temp was around 90 degrees. This summer it was really cold. The temp never reached, so far over 82. I was using my heat in July to keep it 68 degrees.

Military facilities~
Sault St. Marie: About 1hr 15min away. They are north of us. They have an exchange, but it's very small.
Traverse City: 2hrs south. Again very small exchange

Medical~
We are all on Tricare Prime Remote. Here in Cheboygan is Dr.Baltzer. He is a very good adult doctor. There is a pediatric doctor in St. Ignace (about 30min away North). There are two doctors there. That is at the Mackinac Straits Hospital. These are the only two doctors that accept Tricare Prime Remote. There is one hospital, Cheboygan Memorial Hospital. Its about 2 miles from the boat, and 1/2 mile from housing.

Housing~
There is housing. There are four units in a building. It consists of 3 - 3bedroom units and one 4bedroom unit. All units have a one car garage behind the units. There are about 5 of these buildings. There are also about 7 single family units with an attached garage for mainly officers. Housing is located about 2 miles from the boat and its on a dead end drive. They have tennis courts and a playground. Plus a large field for other activities.

Shopping~
Walmart, Kmart, Glens(food store), Save a lot, Fashion Bug, Do it Center. There are also a lot of cute stores downtown that tourists seem to love.
Traverse City (abaout 2hrs south) has a great mall. Toys R us, Pier1, Home Depot, and your other mall stores.
Muskegon Mall (about 4hrs south) Has a much better mall. They have Old Navy, Gap, Meijers, Kohls, Limited.
Petoskey: About 40mintues away has Home Depot, Pier 1.

Child Care/Schools~
It depends on what grade your child is in as to where they go to school. Every year they seem to change it. But the schools are Cheboygan East, and West and Inverness. There is the Cheboygan Middle and High school that is right next to housing.

Adult Schools~
North Central Michigan College, Petoskey Mi. Great college. They also offer classes at night through the high school here in Cheboygan. It depends on what your majoring in.

If you have a boat, then boating, the rivers are absolutely beautiful!

Swimming- There are a lot of public access to the lakes. For $29 you can buy a seasonal pass to all the state parks.
