Date there~
1997-2000

Weather~
Fall and spring are very pleasant. Winter is long and cold, but the snow makes it a lot of fun. Summers are nice. We get some hot days( hot enough for ac!), but we have had to wear jackets on the Fourth of July before.

Military facilities~
Selfridge is an Air National Guard Base that houses all five branches of the military. We have an average size commissary and exchange. We have a gas station, bowling alley, child development center, golf course, swimming pool, all ranks club, post office, credit union, barbershop, pizza place, and dry cleaners.

Medical~
There is a small clinic on base that you can use if you are Tricare standard. If you are prime, you must pick one provider. We have had prime for about one year, and it is getting better. There are many great doctors to choose from. Detroit has an excellent children's hospital.

Housing~
Housing is no longer available at Selfridge due to the BRAC closings. You will receive BAH and live on the economy.
Selfridge ANG base is where the Air Station is located and where any one attached to the Coast Guard in Detroit lives. We are about 25 miles north of Detroit on beautiful Lake St. Clair. We are only 30 minutes from the Canadian border.
There is never a problem getting housing at Selfridge. The longest wait is usually two weeks. There are apartments and 2 story townhouses on the base for E4 and below. O4 and above live in two story single houses on the base as well. E5 through O3 live at Sebille manor, which is about 3 miles from the base. The houses all have attached garages and most have fenced yards. There are 3 and 4 bedroom homes with 2 baths. Most are duplexes, although there are several single units.
The local telephone company is Ameritech. Local cable company is Adelphia. There are many Internet providers to choose from, including AOL and netzero.

Shopping~
Everything you could ask for is within 5- 10 minutes from the base or Sebille. K-Mart, Target, Meijer, Michael's, Service Merchandise, Pier 1 , Toys R Us, Old Navy, kids consignment stores, Lakeside or Macomb Mall, and many grocery stores.

Child Care/Schools~
There is a good CDC on base that offers daycare, preschool, and after school care. Prices are based on pay grade for all of the services. There is a school across the street from Sebille that the children walk to. Many of us choose to drive our kids to King Academy in Mt. Clemens. It is a public school run by the Edison Project, and It is really an amazing school. Michigan offers school of choice, so if you are willing to drive, your child can go just about anywhere!

Adult Schools~
Macomb Community College is about 10 minutes from here and they offer a nice variety of classes. There is also continuing education offered on base.

Fun Activities~
In the summer, everyone is outside!! There are numerous lakes and parks in the area. There are also more golf courses than I can count. We have nice movie theaters, Henry Ford Village and Museum, IMAX theaters, Red Wings and Vipers Hockey, Tigers baseball, and Lions football, and the Detroit Shock and Pistons basketball. Detroit offers concerts and Broadway plays, symphonies, and Museums. The Detroit Zoo is about 20 minutes away. In the fall, it is great to visit the cider mills, farms and pumpkin patches. We are also only 4 hours away from some fun skiing! There are ice arenas and sledding hills, and ice fishing to enjoy in the winter as well.
There are many volunteer opportunities on the base. The base has a spouse's club, which is open to enlisted and officer wives. The Coast Guard has a Greater Detroit spouse's club open to all spouses. We have a lot of fun in this group! There is also a MOPS group at the chapel on base.

Additional Info~
Being from Texas, I really enjoy the opportunity to experience the four seasons. I am also extremely happy with the wonderful school that I have found for my daughter. I like that we are close to the city, but far enough away to feel safe.
