Station/Boat Location~
USCGC AQUIDNECK (110')
USCGC BLOCK ISLAND (110')
USCGC STATEN ISLAND (110')

Date there~
2001

Weather~
All four seasons, but summer seems to take center stage. Starts warming up in March, doesn't cool down again til October. VERY hot summers, but everything's air conditioned! Winters are fairly mild, this year we got some snow, though!

Military facilities~
Very tiny exchange on the base. Commissary/Exchange facilities at MCAS Cherry Point (about 30 mins away) and Camp Lejeune (about and hour and fifteen minutes away).

Medical~
MTF at Cherry Point. No complaints from the AD side, not sure about dependent care. Most people go to Chapel Hill or Raleigh for specialists.

Housing~
Limited owned housing available at Cherry Point for families with kids. Leased housing available for single E-4 and below. Everyone else, on the economy. House rentals aren't too hard to find, apartments are a little tougher.

Shopping~
Super Wal-Mart, Belk (dept store), grocery stores, specialty shops all in Atlantic Beach/Morehead City. Small mall in New Bern (about 45 mins away), little bigger mall in Jacksonville (hour+). I'm a shop-a-holic and have managed to feed my habit!

Fun Activities~
BEACH! The winter is slow, because this is definitely a resort area. Summer time brings tourists and more things open and available. Small aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores (Atlantic Beach), flea markets, auctions, county fairs.

Child Care/Schools~
Can't help here...no kids.

Adult Schools~
Carteret Community College is a good CC from what I've heard. Lots of spouses take classes while they're here.

Additional Info~
Small town life, no traffic issues, quiet in the winter, a little busier in the summer. I'm going to miss this place when I have to move, and I thought I was coming to the end of the earth!
