Weather~
cold and very windy, your hair will always be in a ponytail. The temp may not be to low but the wind chill will freeze you! It does snow occasionally but nothing sticks. Summer: BEAUTIFUL, mid 60's to mid 90's. The summer is usually nice with very few cloudy/rainy days. This is a prime spot for hurricanes! We have been evacuated at least once each year.
Military facilities~
The group has a small exchange on base with gas. The closest commissary is 3 hours north in Norfolk, Virginia.
Medical~
Tricare prime remote. There are two family practice offices here on the island, both within 15 minutes of the base. One in Avon and one in Hatteras.
Housing~
UPDATE: THERE CURRENTLY IS NO HOUSING. 03/09/05
Housing here is one of the best if not THE best! Beautiful 2-3-4 bedroom, 3 level duplexes. Housing is just beside the base and a very short walk to the ocean. I work on base and walk to work every day. I can also see the beach from my back porch and my bedroom! All units have 2 bathrooms, washer/dryer hook ups, pull under carports, large storage room on bottom level, lots and lots of closet space, dish washer, front and back porch on second level! There is a pool on base and a fun playground in housing. (housing is gated)
Shopping~
Shopping here on the island is nothing to talk about! Very expensive family owned gift shops. The only commercial thing on the island is the Food Lion in Avon. The only other worthy grocery store is Conners (family owned) which is about 5 minutes from housing here in Buxton. Wal-Mart and K-Mart are both in Nags head which is a 1.5 hour drive in the summer and 1 hour drive in the winter. Everything (even in Nags Head) closes at 9pm in the winter months, so be sure you get your milk before 9!!!!! If you are a real shopper (Target, Old Navy, Big Malls, Pet Smart, etc.) then your a 3 hour drive from your haven!
Child Care/Schools~
I don't have children so I don't know a lot about these places but there is a daycare facility in Buxton just across the street from the High School. This is about 5-8 minutes from housing. High School is 8-12 grade. There is a separate grade school in Buxton as well!
Adult Schools~
Albemarle College in Elizabeth City 2.5 hours north.
Fun Activities~
It's an island....BEACH, BEACH, BEACH!!! Sport Fishing, Camping, Parasailing, Kite Boarding, Wind Surfing, Kayaking! You can take the free 45 min ferry to Okracoke which is fun ever once in a while!
Additional Info~
As long as you can do without McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys, Taco Bell, and Wal-Mart on a daily bases, this is a beautiful island and absolutely one you need to say you lived on! The command is wonderful and it is a family atmosphere from way back! Just remember everything here is very EXPENSIVE and your at least and hours drive away from anything commercial! Other than that, I wish we could stay for another tour! Good Luck!
