Weather~
The weather is typical for the east coast. Mild Winters, not much snow or ice. Summers can get hot but the average temp. in July is only 95 degrees. Hurricane season can get a little harry but as long as you are smart about evacuations your fine.
Military facilities~
The Elizabeth City Station has a very small exchange which has more novelty items than anything really usefull. There is no medical on base for dependents. The closest full service base is Oceana Naval Base in Virginia Beach, VA about 1 hr drive from Elizabeth City, NC.
Medical~
Medical is all offbase if you have Tricare standard you are used to this but Tricare Prime families may need to get some help finding a provider. The Tricare website can help with this www.tricare.org.
Housing~
The on base housing is a community of 2 and 3 bedroom townhomes located about 5 min from base. Their are approximately 8 units per building. They are definitely not fancy but BAH is only $900 and the average rent in town for a 2 bedroom 600 sq ft home is $800. If you don't mind the drive about 30 minutes south of the base is the town of Hertford and that is a much quieter farm town verses the city living near base. The cost of living is a little cheaper there.
Shopping~
There is currently not much to choose from. A Wal-Mart super center is in the process of being built, (It has been in the process for 1 yr already) They have what they call a mall. It has a Belk, Hair Cuttery, JcPenney's, Goody's clothing store and not much more. Grocery Stores available are Farm Fresh, and 2 Food Lions.
Child Care/Schools~
I live in the Hertford area and the schools here are great. I don't know much about the Elizabeth City area schools though.
Adult Schools~
There Is the Elizabeth City State University, and the College of the Albermarle.
Fun Activities~
There really isn't to much of what you would call fun here. A rap club called Levels and on base they have Hanger 7 cheap drinks, bad entertainment!
