:: Emerald Isle, NC - MudQueen
Station/Boat Location~
Station Emerald Isle (located between Sector Ft. Macon (Cherry Point) and Camp Lejeune

Date there~
2005 - present

Weather~
Mild winters (little if any snow), beautiful fall and spring, long southern summer. Can get humid but there is usually a nice coastal breeze.

Military facilities~
We live in Cape Carteret, halfway between Camp Lejeune/New River and MCAS Cherry Point. Commissary, Exchange etc. on both. Excellent commissary at Lejeune.

Medical~
Tricare Prime care at Cherry Point or Lejeune. Both have hospitals. We are standard and like our local medical so far. Plenty of specialists. Big teaching hospitals are within a few hours (Duke, Chapel Hill, East Carolina).

Housing~
Housing at Cherry point and Lejeune. We live on the economy in Cape Carteret and love it. Great schools and shopping either direction about 20-25 minutes. Rents are more expensive here and on the island. Morehead city is much cheaper but has less curb appeal (I personally don't think Morehead is as pretty an area but many areas surrounding it are).

Shopping~
Jacksonville: Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Jeffrey's/ToysRUs, Bed Bath & Beyond, Petsmart, JCPenny, Sears, Belk, OfficeMax, Circuit City, BestBuy,CVS, Eckerd, fast food, etc. NO STARBUCKS!
Morehead City: Lowes, Walmart, Kmart, Pier1, Home Emporium, CVS, Eckerd, fast food etc.. Again, NO STARBUCKS!
Wilmington is an hour and a half from me and has even more shopping.

Adult Schools~
Two year colleges: Carteret County Community College, Morehead City and Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville.
Four year/grad: East Carolina is a hike but I know some here make the trip.

Fun Activities~
Everything water; fishing, boating, beach-going, surfing (small surf- bring the long board LOL) The Outer Banks and the Crystal Coast are your internet keywords to find loads to do and see. The aquarium is re-opening this year.
Lots of sports available for the kids(most popular in the area are Babe Ruth Little League, Football (peewee on up), Soccer League)in addition to a serious gymnastics/dance facility in Cedar Point (4 miles from me) as well as Karate, horseback riding, etc.

Additional Info~
We would stay here and make it our forever home if we could. There are tons of military here and the services available are great. For us it is the best of all worlds, beach, small town, country, small city. I can be in just about any setting within a half hour. Best of all? the beach is minutes away.
