Weather~
Summers are hot, winters are cold, we have all four seasons.

Military facilities~
Sandy Hook has a small exchange, Fort Monmouth Approx-30 min away has commissary, exchange, Clinic-medical and dental, pharmacy, optical shop, gas station

Medical~
Depends on what you have, Tricare goes to Fort Monmouth-only, we currently go there and it's not too bad, Family Health Plan - external doctors.

Housing~
Where to begin, we are located at the top of the Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook New Jersey. We are approximately 20 minutes from a major highway (Garden State Parkway). You have to drive 5 miles through the park before you get to the base.
In the winter it is not too bad for traveling, but the summer poses a problem. The Park is all Beach. We have toll booths to go through, of course we don't pay, but the lines get a little long. There is only one way on and one way off, so traffic backs up a lot on the weekends. It is not worth leaving after 2 pm , you cannot get off the island. You also have a problem getting on after about 11 am. And therefore if you do go anywhere plan on being out all day, or leave early and get back early.

Right now there are approximately 35 families, the community is small. It is pleasant. There are 2-4 bedroom town homes, some with garages and some without. The houses are a little old but in ok shape, the designs are a little weird, but workable. You will need ac units in each room, the houses have heat but no A/C. You are responsible for maintaining your own yards so you will need a lawn mower also.

Shopping~
Well to get anywhere it takes like 15 minutes to get off the island then there isn't really much close right off the hook.
Monmouth Mall is about 20 minutes away, Freehold raceway mall about 30 min, there are Outlets in Freehold also. There is an A&P, Foodtown, Shoprite, Stop and shop, CVS, off the hook about 10 min. Also there is Mcdonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, along the way. There is also a Target.

Child Care/Schools~
Well right now I do not know of any on base child care. Off base is rather expensive.
Elementary K-5-Navesink about 15 min. away- bus picks up on base
Middle School- Bayshore 6-8 grades Bus picks up early 7 am
High school- not sure but the bus pickup also on base

Adult Schools~
Monmouth University, Brookedale community College

Fun Activities~
Beaches, hiking, bike riding, walking, all on the hook, we also have a lighthouse here.
Sesame Place about an hour and a half away and free for all military members and up to 4 dependents
Six Flags Great Adventure- a bit pricey, 45 min away
Keansburg amusement park - reasonable prices- Boardwalk games and rides 15 min. away
Manhattan is about a 2 hour drive- worth it if you never been there
The base has a couple of small playgrounds, volleyball net, tennis courts.
There is a Family Association on base, they mainly do kids activities, holiday parties.
Base has a pool, you need a pool pass, and it is only open when there is a lifeguard to volunteer, so basically it's hardly open and when it is it's for like 2 hours.
