Station/Boat Location~
Staten Island

Date there~
2003 - present

Weather~
Summers here are hot and humid, like most of the east coast. Winters are cold and we've gotten plenty of snow the last 2 years. There are some good sledding hills on base! Fall and spring are both mild and comfortable.

Military facilities~
There is an small Exchange on base. Ft. Hamilton (right across the Verrazzano Bridge) has a commissary which beats the prices on Staten Island but it leaves much to be desired in the way of fresh produce and natural foods.

Medical~
There are several doctors to choose from in Tricare's plan.

Housing~
If you aren't from this area, the housing is okay. I am in a 2 bedroom apt. and it is SMALL. You are given a small storage unit, but if you have a lot of furniture or had a house with a garage and end up in a 2 bedroom, be prepared. Housing could be much nicer- many people don't clean up after their dogs, some don't throw their garbage away properly, etc... Ft. Wadsworth is a national park, so the location is great and we've got some amazing views.

Shopping~
If you like Target or Walmart you have to go to New Jersey. The mall here is okay but I prefer to go to New Jersey or to The City to shop. Traffic is a mess here. It can take you 15 minutes to get to the Staten Island mall or 50 minutes- you never know.

Fun Activities~
There is always stuff to do. New York City is awesome and only a (free) ferry ride away. There's everything you could imagine- from theater and museums to street performers, Central Park...the list goes on. If you are moving to the area, get a book on New York City, it really is a fabulous, exciting place.
