Station/Boat Location~ANT Astoria -
USCGC STEADFAST (210')
USCGC ALERT (210') -
USCGC FIR (225')
Date there~July 2002
Weather~Summer: Beautiful doesn't get above 85 usually. Winter: It's a downer! Most of the time it is around upper 40's to upper 50's and LOTS of rain.
Military facilities~There is Group over in Warrenton, but no Commissary. There is an exchange over by CG Housing.
Medical~ You will have Tricare Prime Remote, which means that you can pick a civilian doctor.
Housing~They have Coast Guard Housing 2,3, and 4 bedrooms. They are really nice and they are newer built in like '94 I believe. 2bdrms are pretty small though. Not a lot of apts. here that I know of.
Shopping~They have the downtown but not any malls or big dept. stores. They nearest mall is in Longview, WA about a hour away and they also have a Target and Wal-Mart. In Warrenton there is Fred Meyer which is kinda like a Target. It has a grocery store, clothes, electronics, and housewares.
Fun Activities~There is the beach, you can go to Seaside and walk around there. It's a touristy place so they have lots to do. They have an aquarium which I heard is pretty nifty.
Child Care/Schools~Don't know much about the schools. I know that CG Housing is like 2 mins away from Astoria High school.
Adult Schools~I'm attending Clatsop Community College which is also right up the street from CG Housing. A lot of the wives go there.
Additional Info~You gotta like small town living here. Not a lot around if your used to "city life".
