Weather~
The weather is generally mild. It does get pretty cold in the winter, a good waterproof jacket is definitely recommended! It is a wet area to live in. We get a lot of rain. We don't have a fall really. We have two seasons overall. In the Summer, it can get up to 75 or so and is generally sunny and nice. In the Fall/Winter/Spring, it can get down to 30 or so (in Spring/Fall usually up to 50's) and it is VERY WET!
Military facilities~
The closest CG Exchange is in North Bend which is about an hour and a half drive South. There is also an Exchange in Astoria, which is about two and a half hours North.
Medical~
We pretty much all use the local clinic. There is no military medical available. The clinic is small but nice and efficient. There is also a Woman's Clinic in Newport, about 20 min drive, that is great for OB/GYN needs.
There are two hospitals, one in Newport (20 min) and one in Lincoln City (25-30 min).
Dr Parsons in Newport is the best for a dentist.
Housing~
The station has 7 single family homes. They are all 3-4 bedroom homes with a yard. They are located in two seperate neighborhoods in town and are within a couple of minutes from the Station. They are well maintained, and nice to live in. Availability depends on the year. I recommend getting in touch with the station when you get orders to find out what the availability looks like. There is also housing attatched to Station Yaquina Bay in Newport (15-20 min drive) that is often used for Station Depoe Bay personell as well.
You can find rentals on the community within BAH. However, you are better off looking in Lincoln City (20 min North) or Newport (15 min South). Apartments tend to run on the small side, and it is often tricky to find rentals that are nice and allow pets.
Shopping~
Newport has Wal Mart, Safeway, and Fred Meyer (a grocery/department store). Lincoln City has an Outlet Mall and Safeway. Salem is about 1 1/2 hours away and has a mall and most other types of shopping.
We do most of our grocery shopping at Fred Meyer. The outlets in Lincoln City www.tangeroutlets.com are small but nice to shop at. We go to Salem once a month or every couple months to go to Target and such.
Adult Schools~
There are a couple of branches of the Oregon Coast Community College in Lincoln City and Newport.
Fun Activities~
The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport (membership recommended, worth it!)
Beaches, hiking, boating, crabbing, fishing, hunting, etc...Lighthouses, Tillamook Cheese Factory (1 hr drive)
Oregon Zoo (2 1/2 hr drive in Portland, but worth the drive!)
Additional Info~
Depoe Bay itself is a super small town, but so nice to live in! The people are friendly, the local shops are cute and views are incredible! Driving places isn't a big deal, you get used to it and most of the drives are gorgeous! The rain can take some getting used to, but after awhile you hardly notice it. We have really enjoyed living here, there is lots to do and as I said before, it is beautiful!
