Weather~
All 4 seasons. Winter is a little dreary. It's cold, snowy and icy! Spring, Fall and Summer are great. It can get a little hot and humid in the Summer, but usually it's pretty nice.
Military facilities~
There is the SSD where the Osage is moored at. The MSO has equipment there also. The MSO is located in downtown Pittsburgh.
There is a commissary in Moon Township and ID's at 911th Airlift Wing . Both are scheduled for closure, but that may be a while.
Medical~
Tricare Prime Remote is your best choice here. No MTF's are available, so you choose from Tricare providers in the area. If you are standard, this is the time to change to Prime.
Find a provider pharmacy and you are good for the normal prescription co-pays.
Housing~
There are single quarters available at the station.
Everyone else lives on the economy. We live in Mars, PA but I would suggest living in Moon Township or Beaver. Mars/Cranberry/Zelienople area is about 25 minutes to the station. As long as you have I-79 within a short distance from your house, you can easily live North, but you must have 79 within reach.
Shopping~
Robinson Township Mall area has everything, including an IKEA store. Ross Park Mall is further North, closer to the Mars area. There is Pittsburgh Mills mall in Tarentum that was just built. Plenty of Targets, Walmarts, Costco, Sams and a few KMarts.
Be sure to take a trip down to the Strip District. Wholey's seafood market and Pennsylvannia Macaroni Company are wonderful, along with many other great stores!
The Grocery stores are Giant Eagle, Shop n Save and Festival. I think they are sporty and try to get to the commissary for my main groceries. I find that the meats are much cheaper at the commissary. There is an Aldi's in Butler, but am not sure if there are others here.
Child Care/Schools~
MARS area schools are really good. I've been pleased so far. They do have Tender Care daycares around here.
Adult Schools~
Duquesne University and University of Pittsburgh.....those are a couple of the main ones. There is a lot to choose from.
