:: Newport, RI - Parrothead
Station/Boat Location~
USCGC IDA LEWIS (175')
At the time, usually one week out, one week in, but always subject to change. Duty roster for DH as a first class/chief was usually about once a week. The CO is a Warrant Four (I believe), the XO is a Senior Chief.

Date there~
June 1998 to August 2000

Weather~
Four seasons. Warm summers and humid in August. Wet in the spring. Nice, crisp fall (my favorite time there) and windy, cold winters (some snow, but not really a lot).

Military facilities~
Navy War College is there. A adequate exchange facility and commissary. The uniform store there carried a small selection of CG uniforms. Dry cleaner on base did alterations (pretty fair prices) and if your uniform pants were unhemmed, they did them for free!

We also utilized the pool (indoor) for swimming lessons (mommy & me) for DD#1.

Medical~
Tricare Prime could use the Navy clinic on base. New facility (in 1998-2000) and I was very pleased with the service and care we received. Any hospitalization was at the civilian hospital in Newport.

Housing~
CG had privileges in Navy housing. They are separated by rank. New, renovated housing and IMO the best we have ever had and probably will ever have. As a senior enlisted member, we had a two story duplex. It had three bedrooms (we were only two bedroom qualified), three baths, separate dining room, living room, huge kitchen with all appliances (and a built in microwave), BIG closets (and lots of them), mudroom/utility room, attached garage and fenced in back yard.

Shopping~
On Aquidneck Island there was a Walmart,BJ's Wholesale, Benny's (discount type store), Job Lot type store, several different grocery stores. Newport has lots of boutique type shopping. A ride off island in either direction (back into Rhode Island or into Massachusetts) had malls, Sams Club, you name it.

Fun Activities~
Wineries, beaches, kite flying, picnics, Cape Cod (an hour away), just to name a few.

Child Care/Schools~
I didn't have children in school then, but there is a CDC on base that I believe we had privileges at.

Adult Schools~
Several state schools, Brown University (in Providence), Johnson & Wales University (great adult education classes).

Additional Info~
We really enjoyed our stay there. Holds a special memory for us - our first DD was born there.
