Station/Boat Location~
ANT Galveston

Date there~
Aug 2002 to Present

Weather~
Summer...hot and wet. You simply must have AC. Fall was still warm, but less so and still really wet. Winter has been fairly mild, but it has gotten down into the 30s once or twice. We've also had 60s and 70s in January, so go figure.

Military facilities~
Nada. There is small exchange on the base. There is a lot of Coast Guard here. An MSO detachment, a Group, station, some construction tenders and others I don't know of.

Medical~
Tricare Prime. I didn't have a problem finding a provider, although you have to go off island for hospital service. Considering the wait at the local university run hospital...it's not such a bad thing.

Housing~
Most people live off the island. We are one of the few that live on and possibly the only one's who have bought. We prefer the island. Rent is not too bad here, but there is a lot of college studetns and finding a place can be hard. There is no military housing here.

Shopping~
Wal-Mart, and a new Home Depot and Target opening soon. Otherwise,a small mall about 20 minutes away and a really nice one 45 minutes away. The Galleria, which is a huge, very swanky mall, is about an hour away.

Fun Activities~
The Beach, the beach and oh, more beach.

Child Care/Schools~
The schools are pretty good here. The high school is really big and kind of prison like. If your child is not in the "college-bound" category, live off island if they are high school aged. The basic graduation requirements are higher here than most states. Plus, you must pass a test to graduate.

Adult Schools~
We have Galveston College (www.gc.edu), which is a small comm college. We also have College of the Mainland which is a larger comm college (www.com.edu). it's about 25 minutes away. On island, we have Texas A&M at Galveston (Woop Woop Gig'em Aggies!). That is a 4-year university that has strictly Marine related degrees. For more information see www.tamug.edu. About 40 min north is University of Houston at Clear Lake. It's a larger 4-year university.

Additional Info~
Large, mosquitos that will hunt you and maybe pick you up and carry you off. And yes...cockroaches. We have seen some, but really not too many. They are big though. Plus, there are rattlesnakes.
