Station/Boat Location~
CAMSLANT (Communications Area Master Station Atlantic)

Date there~
2005-2009

Weather~
All four seasons hot summers and very little snow in the winter time. Spring and fall are very nice cool, breezy and the foliage is really pretty out here in the woods.

Military facilities~
This is Virginia there are countless Military installations about 20 between all the branches. We are on Navy Northwest Annex which is on the North Carolina -Chesapeake VA border. There is NOT a commissary. On base you will have access to a mini Exchange, post office, gym, swimming pool, bowling alley, bar/restaurant, camping site, and family center. There is a chapel as well.

Medical~
There many clinics on most of the above mentioned bases and of course Portsmouth Naval Hospital they do pretty much everything there. There is a small clinic by the base and a dentist for now the dentist does not see dependents.

Housing~
The base is very nice as of 2008 they have completed several streets of new housing and the older ones are being upgraded or replaced still they are all nice and roomy. Many people choose to live out here and commute to other bases it really is very safe which is so important if you have kids, you can feel comfortable with them playing outside. The base is a little tucked away but still your only 20 min or so from anything you could want. We have enjoyed living here especially after Norfolk...avoid it and Portsmouth if you can. We are lucky we only took a 6 month least originally saved us allot of hassle. Know the area you're choosing to live in chicks. As of this post there no updated pictures on the housing site but the other info it pretty accurate. There fairly large, some detach garages others attached, privacy fence, decent size back yard several play grounds, and most are 3+ bedrooms. Pecan Crescent

Shopping~
As I mentioned the base maybe tucked away but it isn't far from any and everything. Many of the other bases have commissaries the nearest one is about 35-45 min away. If you want a regular food store there is one 15 min away in North Carolina as well as a couple restaurants and general shopping. There two huge malls with in 35-40 drive or so.

Child Care/Schools~
There several choices including private but Hickory Elementary/High School is where the kids on base tend to go and the buses come out to the base and picks up the kids around 7:10 am for K-6 little after 8 am everyone else. Hickory elementary is a very good school with high standards and at my last check placed really well on the national level. There is a CDC and a Boys and Girls Club by the base as well.

Adult Schools~
You may have gathered by now it is a big and busy place Hampton Roads. There many Colleges, Universities and Technical Institutes.

Fun Activities~
There is plenty to do out here, a lot of history, museums, theme parks, theaters, beaches, ect also housing plans lots of activities for the residents as well.

Additional Info~
All things considered this is a nice area it can be a bit crowed and crazy but BAH seems to be enough that you have allot of choices for areas to live. Of course there are lots of bases this being one of the better one yes, it on the small side and sort of in the country but its safe, and the environment is very nice, laid back a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Hampton Roads. I am more of a city girl my DH a small town boy from Kansas and we both agree this is one of the better places to live/rent/buy in this area. Good Luck.
