:: Norfolk, VA - superfly
Station/Boat Location~
Maintenance and Logistics Command Atlantic (MLCA)

Date there~
DH was here June 2005 Sept 2007. I'm still here.

Weather~
Summers are hot and very humid especially in July and Aug. Winters are pretty much mild and short. Spring comes early, and March is very unpredictable, it can 70 degrees one day, then 45 the next. Fall is very pretty and not too cold.

Military facilities~
Fort Eustis is in Newport News, Naval Weapons Station is in Yorktown as well as USCG Reserve Training center. Hampton has Langley Air force base.

Medical~
We were lucky enough to see civilian doctors, however there was one specialist my daughter saw at Portsmouth Naval. If MTF are full, you will be sent out, which was our case. CHKD is the children's hospital in Norfolk. All the cities in Hampton Roads have hospitals as well. There are two in Newport News.

Housing~
We bought a house in Newport News. The commute to downtown Norfolk w/o traffic is 30 min.

Shopping~
TONS! Jefferson Ave has every store you can think of, including the Patrick Henry Mall. Norfolk has a larger mall. Prime Outlets is in Williamsburg which is 15-20 mins from NN.

Child Care/Schools~
DS went to one yr at Richneck Elem, and is currently at Dozier Middle school. Both schools are good. Great teacher/parent contact at Dozier.

Adult Schools~
Several colleges and trade schools.

Fun Activities~
The beach!!!! Yorktown has a small beach, great for younger kids as the waves are small. Virginia Beach is touristy, which gets really crowded in the summer months, but they have great waves!
Busch Gardens, plenty of museums, hiking, camp grounds, Children's museum in Portsmouth, Aquarium in VA Beach. Colonial Williamsburg is great to just walk around and roam.
Lots of concerts in the summer months, the Norva in Norfolk is a great place to see live bands as well.

Additional Info~
I really love this area. I have found people to be very friendly and polite. It's very clean here in VA too. There really is a lot to do here, makes doing the GEO not so bad when you really like where you live.
I know a lot of people complain about the traffic, but being from NYC it really isn't that bad. The commute from the Peninsula to South Side isn't that bad.
