Weather~
Being from New England the weather is pleasant. Summer can be humid and sticky high 80's 90's, Spring comes early and summer temps can last until late October. As a result not much snow.
Military facilities~
Langley AFB is on the Peninsula, the Navy has large bases in Norfolk and Little Creek with great exchanges and comissaries. Smaller naval bases in Portsmouth (Scotts Annex), and Dam Neck. Plus Oceana in Virginia Beach which is currently on the BRAC list.
Medical~
There is the Portsmouth Naval Hospital but when we moved here it was full. Our family does Tricare Standard so I can take us anywhere in the community without a referral. With the hospital full and a large military community many with Tricare Standard can go out into the community. The problem is that a lot of doctors have limited slots for Prime patients.
Housing~
Most people in Hampton Roads live on the economy. The housing market is booming here. Like everywhere houses go on the market and are quickly bought. It was frustrating for us at first but we eventually found just the right home in the Western Branch section of Chesapeake. Western Branch has some of the best schools in the area so it is a highly desirable location for families with school-age kids. It is also close to the ISC and District/Atlantic Area offices requiring no tunnels to get to work.
Shopping~
There is pretty much everything you can possibly think of in the area for shopping all the big chain stores are here, Several malls, and if you want to travel to Williamsburg or North Carolina OUTLETS!
Adult Schools~
There are so many higher education opportunities in the area. Tidewater Community College has several campuses, Old Dominion University, Norfolk State University, Regent University, Eastern Virginia Medical School and Virginia Wesleyan College. There are more on the Peninsula.
Fun Activities~
Too many to tell. Tons of annual events. Your best bet is to buy the Insiders Guide to Virginia Beach. Plus, check the weekend section of Thursdays Virginian-Pilot.
