2002 - present

Weather~
The weather varies. The summer is hot and humid 70's-90's, spring is nice 60's-70's, fall is nice 50's-60's, winter is cold 20's-50's. The weather often changes quickly.

Military facilities~
Coast Guard Base, Naval Base

Medical~
There's the Navy Hospital.

Housing~
We're on the economy. I'm not sure if there are any other options. We found a nice apartment that allows pets. We got online to apartments.com and other websites and checked a few places out and decided upon our present location.

Shopping~
There's shopping all right, let's see...MacArthur Center is a three-story mall with a movie theater at the top, Greenbrier is a two-story mall, Military Circle, Patrick Henry Mall, Chesapeake Square Mall, Lynnhaven Mall is two-stories, etc. There are WalMarts, Targets, Home Depots etc.

Child Care/Schools~
We do not have children, so I am not all that familiar with the school system. I have heard there are good schools in the area, but of course, there are weaker schools as well.

Adult Schools~
There are plenty of choices...Tidewater Community Colleges, Thomas Nelson Community Colleges, Hampton University, Norfolk State University, Regent College, Christopher Newport University, Old Dominion University(Go Monarchs!!)... There are business/trade/tech schools as well, such as Kee Business College etc.

Fun Activities~
There are plenty of bars around the area, the VA Zoo, lots of Museums/Tours (military and otherwise), The Battleship Wisconsin is here, Norfolk Botanical Gardens, VA Beach boardwalk, movies, Norfolk Tides baseball, plenty of dining, close to the Outer Banks, NC, close to Yorktown and Historical Williamsburg, there is Paramount's Kings Dominion Amusement Park, Bush Gardens/Water Country USA, and there are Hampton Roads websites where you can look up activities. There are many festivals in the area and around the Waterfront in Norfolk that are fun also.

Additional Comments:
At first I said I hated it here. I realize now, it's not the place that I hated, it's being without my husband when he's out on patrol, that I didn't care for. The area is ok if you're willing to give it a chance. It's grown on me and become "home," at least for the time being. I used to complain that there is nothing to do here, but there really are things to do, you just have to be willing to look for them.
So if you're just coming into the area, good luck to you in your new "home."
