:: Kodiak, AK - MichelleEnder
Station/Boat Location~
Air Station Kodiak

Date there~
June 2003-July 2006

Weather~
We have long rainy, windy winters. The temps are milder for Alaska but the wind is fierce. We do get snow but it doesn't shut anything down. No snow days for schools EVER. Summers are too short but a good one will bring temps in the 60's-70's. Folks complain if it gets up to 80. No ac needed.

Military facilities~
It's the largest CG base in the country. We boast an Exchange, Commissary, convenience store, clinic, boat house, bowling alley, movie theater, pizza parlor, sports bar, indoor pool, gym, gas station, child care center, teen center, chapel, etc

Medical~
We have a small clinic/hospital on base with limited abilities and no after hours care for dependents. You also have the option to chose a private dr from the community and have use of the local civilian hospital. Some specialty care must be obtained off island in Anchorage by way of CG paid commercial flights or on a CG C-130 flight offered free about twice a month with medical orders.

Housing~
We have some of the best CG housing I've seen. We have about 4 communities or housing developments. On base (inside the base gate) there is both housing for Officers and enlisted members with more housing off base (but still on CG property). Many of the houses are newer or recently updated. Most are duplexes with individual fenced yards. Some are apartment style quads.

Shopping~
We have a small Walmart and a Safeway grocery store. There are many little shops in town to find a lot of what you need. Most people take advantage of the Space Available program to take C-130 flights to Anchorage to hit the mall. This means you do some power shopping to be back on the CG flight returning the same evening. Also, we shop via internet a lot.

Adult Schools~
University of Alaska Anchorage has a community style college here. It has an nursing program among others.

Fun Activities~
It's a great place for a fisherman, hunter, avid hiker or trail blazer. Kodiak hosts an annual Crab Festival that brings folks from all over. We also have a whale fest that is primarily a season for whale migration watching.

Additional Info~
Kodiak is a beautiful place, great for outdoorsmen. Be aware it can be difficult to live on this small island. If you love your mall and chain restaurants, Kodiak might not be for you. It can be very costly to travel off island to visit relatives or to shop. It can feel isolating in some ways and feel like you are living in a fish bowl at times, as with any small town. Kodiak can also be a wonderful place for your kids to grow up safely with many benefits of living in a tight CG community. Do your homework before you request Kodiak. If you do that and come here. You will have a one of a kind CG experience.
