Weather~
Weather for Ferndale/ Eureka during winter season is in the mid 30's to low 40's on average.Spring and summer weather ranges from mid 50's to high 60's, sometimes hitting 70. It rains ALOT and is usually overcast.

Medical~
There is a hospital in Fortuna and 2 hospitals in Eureka. There are plenty of medical facilities and pharmacies (including Walgreen's) and many accept Tricare.

Housing~
Housing is available in Eureka only (Ferndale housing will be phased out as of 09/'08).

Shopping~
Shopping is pretty minimal. We have a "mall" but it is one level and half of it is vacant. There are some good stores, however, such as Gap, Gap Kids, PacSun, Zumiez, Mervin's, Sears, Wet Seal, PetCo, Bed, Bath & Beyond, and Christopher and Banks. There are hair and nail salons throughout the county. There are little boutiques in "Victorian" Ferndale, but they are primarily touristy baubles. There are a few jewelers in the mall and in Old Town Eureka as well.

As for grocery stores, we have Safeway and Rays Food Place as the main "chains" and Eureka Natural Foods has many organic products and is similar to Trader Joe's.

As for coffee companies and fast food locations, there are several Starbucks Coffee locations and two Dutch Bros. Coffee franchises, and we have Carl's Jr., Burger King, McDonald's, Subway, Taco Bell, Quizno's, Sbarro and KFC. Of course, there are many sit-down restaurants too, such as Applebee's, Denny's, lots of Chinese and Mexican food restaurants, Italian and a few Japanese restaurants (including The Ritz which is like Bennihana's) and various diners and cafe's.

Child Care/Schools~
We do not have children, but Eureka has a high school and middle school as well as a continuation school. There are a few elementary schools as well. All of these listings can be found in the Welcome Aboard Package on District 11's homepage.

Adult Schools~
College of the Redwoods is the local community college (www.redwoods.edu) and Humboldt State University is the local State University. There is also an Adult School.

Fun Activities~
Humboldt County is a beautiful region of California. It is green and covered in tall Redwoods. The coastline is gorgeous....but WILD. I recommend that only SKILLED surfers tackle the crazy waves of Humboldt County...
Outdoorsy people will love this area as it is full of opportunities for hikers, kayakers, bird-watchers, campers, fishers and hunters. As for the more "domestic"-type people, there isn't too much except for going to the movie theatres, bowling and shopping.

San Fransisco is the closest metropolitan city with a plethora of cites and attractions etc...and it is only 4 1/2 hours away.

Additional Info~
Humboldt Bay is a great billet for the outdoorsy adventurer who doesn't mind wearing a light to heavy jacket year-round. It rains and its windy most of the year, so sun-worshipers might not find it to be the best place to lay out on the beach. There is little traffic and the beauty of the surrounding areas is breathtaking.
