Station/Boat Location~
USCGC CONFIDENCE (210')

Date there~
2004 - 2006

Weather~
Hot in the summer...warm year around. It didn't feel much like Christmas when it was 70 degrees but we all had nice tans!

Military facilities~
Patrick AFB - small CG exchange

Medical~
If you have prime you have to be seen on the base. They have two pediatricians and also family practice doctors and some PA's. There is also a pharmacy on base. There is no ob care there or hospital so if you are pregnant you will be referred off base. There are three big hospitals within 30-45 minutes of base and you can go to any of those.

Housing~
The housing is on the Air Force base or else you can live in South Housing which is right beside the Air Force base but is privatized. All the housing is beautiful and you can see the beach from most of it. B/c of the gate though you can only walk to the beach if you live in south housing..but it is just a short drive from on base. We loved our house there. It is about a 30 minute drive to work for the guys. There is also a good housing market in the area, many of the coasties seem to buy in Port St John. I didn't find much in the way or apartments/rentals but I'm sure they are out there. Personally though if you are not buying I think that the housing they have is a much better deal than what you would get renting with your bah. Especially if you are low ranking and have kids like we do.

Shopping~
There is a Commissary and PX on base. Right down the street from the base there is a regular Walmart and a grocery store. On the mainland (maybe 20 minutes away) there is a Super Walmart, Super Target, and a mall. There are also plenty or restaurants to pick from.

Child Care/Schools~
There is a CDC on base...when we were there there was a 9 month wait for babies though. There are no on base schools..the kids are bussed off. There are also a few private schools in the area.

Adult Schools~
The base offers a few classes here and there at the Education Center which is located in Central housing. There is also a Community College in the area. I think for anything else you'd have to drive an hour to Orlando. I went to school online while we were there - it wasn't worth the commute.

Fun Activities~
The beach!! Seriously..it i nice enough to go almost all year and you will see people in wetsuits surfing on even the coldest days. We mostly did things outside like BBQ and set up the pools for the kids. There is also a really nice outdoor pool at the AF base that is a $1- its only open in the summer though. Disney World, Sea World, and Universal Studios are in Orlando which is about an hour away. There are also a few nice water parks there.

Additional Info~
We LOVED our time in Cape Canaveral. Really I would be surprised if we ever found a place we liked better. It was very close knit community and we were good friends with our neighbors (mostly AF) as well ad having many coastie friends. The weather was beautiful and so was the housing. Plus the are wasn't very busy and there wasn't nearly as much traffic as say Tampa.
