Station/Boat Location~
Station Grand Isle and USCGC STURGEON(87')

Date there~
2006 - PRESENT

Weather~
Summers are VERY HOT! Fall is pretty nice, cools down a little. Winter doesn't get really cold. Sometimes down to the 30's, but for the most part 40-50's. During the summer expect a lot of rain!

Military facilities~
Naval base in New Orleans - 2 1/2 hour drive

Medical~
Prime remote. The nearest Dr./ped./dent. is about a 50-55 min. drive.

Housing~
The housing on base is very nice. We are completely full right now. First come first serve basis. The houses were rebuilt after Katrina. 2-4 bedrooms. Most are duplexes, only a few are single family homes. All have small backyards. A lot of storage space. If you don't live on base, you're going to be driving a lot. We lived in Houma (1 1/2 hour drive), but spent more money driving to and from the island than what we got for BAH. They are building apts. in Galliano (45 min. drive). Some people live in Lockport (1 hour drive). Your best bet is try to get into housing, if not, good luck!

Shopping~
There is one grocery store on the island called Sureway. Nice for little things you need quickly, but expensive. There is also a Conoco gas station. They have good food there you can order. Gas there is 50-75 cents more there than if you to up to Golden Meadow (45 mins away). Other than that there are a few souv. shops, a few restaurants, a few bars, and 2 marinas. The nearest walmart is 45 mins away. If you want to do more shopping than that you have to go to Houma (1 1/2 hours away) They have everything you need there. A lot of people here just shop online and have it shipped to their house.

Child Care/Schools~
Grand Isle has one school K-12. There is also a really good headstart program starting at age 3. The majority of the kids in headstart come from the CG base.

Adult Schools~
LSU (that's all you see down here), other than that I'm not sure. Some people take online courses.

Fun Activities~
In July there is the Tarpon Rodeo. The island gets VERY busy! There are crab races for the kids, and a firework show. Very fun! The beach is right here, so you can always do that. There is a moral boat here that you can use. My husband and I are the ones who fixed it up. :) There are lots of things to do in New Orleans for a day trip. Zoo, aquarium, river walk etc.

Additional Comments~
If you like the city, and like to shop, this isn't the place to live. But, if you don't mind driving, and you like the outdoors, you will love it here! My husband and I bought jetskis, and are always at the beach with our 2 kids. There is a pool and a playground here on base, which the kids love. The wives are always outside with about a million kids running around everywhere. The spouses club is always putting together events for the station, and also ones for just the wives! ;) You can walk out your back door and go fish off the rocks. The sunsets are beautiful. The mosquitos are TERRIBLE! Just make sure you have plenty of OFF!.
