Fort Drum about 70 miles south on Rt 11
Medical~
Tricare Prime, or Remote. Most family physicians are located in Potsdam or Canton (about 1/2 south). Coasties can use the one in town. OBGYN- Massena OBGYN, 22 Center St. Accepts tricare. Massena Memorial Hospital, Canton-Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg(1/2 west on Rt 37)
Housing~
Leased housing, mostly two bedroom apartments. There are lots of rental houses around town that the rent is usually $650 for three bedroom not including utilities. Utilities are extremely inexpensive. Electric is ran from Massena Electric and its hydroelectric because of the power dam located here. Gas is ran by St. Lawrence Gas Company, and is fairly priced. Definitely doable with BAH amount here.
Shopping~
We just got a Super Walmart in 2008!!! And another one coming in Potsdam summer of 2008, There is also Home-depot, tractor supply, Aldies, Hannaford, P&C(grocery), BJ's, St Lawrence center Mall with some stores including Sears, Debs, Claires, JCPenny, K-B toystore. Watertown is 1 1/2hr away on Rt 11 and has a better Mall including Gander Mountain. Syracuse is about 2 1/2hrs away and there you have unlimited shopping!
Child Care/Schools~
Suny Potsdam Child Care Center in the Suny Potsdam College campus, great if you are attending College, because they give you a sliding amount payscale. Canton DayCare in Canton NY.
Massena has three elementary schools~Madison, Nightengale, Jefferson (depending on where you live, I highly recommend Madison or Nightengale. One middle school and one High School.
Adult Schools~
North Country Community College in Malone NY, Suny Potsdam in Potsdam NY,Suny Canton College of Technology in Canton NY, Crane School of Music in Potsdam NY, Clarkson College in Potsdam NY
Fun Activities~
Lots of fishing and boating, shopping, casino, parks and playgrounds, Robert Moses State Park, Adirondack Mountain where your opportunities are endless as far as camping, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling.
Additional Info~
Massena is a small town but has alot to offer if you allow it to soak in.
