Weather~
All four seasons. Summers can be hot and very humid, Winters can be very cold, not many blizzards. Spring is comfortable, fall can be chilly at times.
Military facilities~
Fort Hamilton is right across the Verizanio Bridge. There is an exchange and commissary.
Medical~
Saw civilian doctors in private offices. Since I lived on Staten Island my entire life, I was lucky enough to already know of doctors, and which ones were good.
Housing~
Fort Wadsworth had awesome housing, you would never find anything like the apt there on the economy unless you want to spend over $1.2000 in rent.
Shopping~
Staten Island Mall, plus plenty of malls in New Jersey, which is close by. Kohl's is now open on SI, plenty of shopping is coming, like Christmas Tree Shop!! Plenty of supermarkets, Walmart and Target are in NJ. Down Hylan Blvd is a strip Mall with a Gap, Children's Place, NY & Co, Annie Suz, Starbucks, and TJ Max.
Child Care/Schools~
on base daycare providers, plus day care centers all over. For school aged kids, try to get into Petrides School, it is based on a lottery system, open to all residents of SI. School goes from K-12. VERY ACADEMIC, but the best public school on SI. My son was there from K-2, then we moved :(
Adult Schools~
College of Staten Island, Wagner College, St. John's University, plus colleges and university's in NJ and in Manhattan.
Fun Activities~
Snug Harbor has a Children's Museum, Botanical Garden, fairs and festivals are held there, Farmers Market in summer in St. George, Clove Lakes Park, Silver Lake Park, plus NYC is right there!! Jersey Shore has amusements and the beach.
Additional Info~
Some people maybe turned off since NYC is right here, but the base is quiet, although it is a national park. There is so much to do in and around SI.NYC, NJ and the shores in NJ. Traffic is a pain, but that's anywhere.
